Sky Pilots | Charlie Bussey
Veteran Poster and Boards 4 Low Rez-5 copy.jpg

Charlie served in the Army from the years of 1961 to 1963 during what his wife called the “China Wars”.  He was given the honorary position of “Chaplin” at the South Lyon VFW post.  He was a comforting figure there for many years.  He was a self-taught artist who started painting at age 17.  He would paint with his aunt at each of their homes.  Many of his paintings depict outdoor life.

The painting entitled Sky Pilots depicts the helicopter touching down and troops deploying.  During the Vietnam War the helicopter was one of the most important elements in the daily operations.  They were involved in every aspect, from medevac, to ammo, troop and supply delivery, to aerial fire support. The pilots and crews of these helicopters were heroes, one
and all.

Flag Raising at Iwo Jima | Annonomus

Chester served in the Marine Corp during World War II and fought in the Pacific theater, serving in Tawara and Saipan.  Chester, who honored his Marine Corp status until the day he died, is the father of Patricia Dombecki.  She remembers this painting being displayed in her home for as long as her memory can reach.  The painting is based off the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the historic event.

Rosie the Riveter | Trina

Rosie the Riveter, was on all accounts, the most recognizable female face of World War II’s war industrial effort. The poster of a female factory worker, with a clenched fist and a flexed arm muscle, became the battle cry for women to enter the workforce while their fathers, brothers and husbands fought abroad.

Women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers and many performed jobs of their male counterparts despite the fact that they received less pay for their wages. In 1942, it is believed that the first image of Rosie the Riveter was created by American artist J. Howard Miller. Variations of Miller’s original image followed with the likes of Norman Rockwell’s drawing of the female defense worker which appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post, on May 29, 1943.

American Eagle | Charlie Bussey

Charlie Bussey served in the Army from the years of 1961 to 1963 during what his wife called the “China Wars”.  He was given the honorary position of “Chaplin” at the South Lyon VFW post and served there for many years.  He was a self-taught artist who started painting at age 17 and continued for the rest of his life.  Many of his paintings picture outdoor life.  This painting of the American Eagle was done in 1980 and is displayed at the same VFW post where he served as chaplin.

Curtis Wright Falcon | Deborah Randall Fisher in honor of Robert M Randall

Deborah appliqued the red fabric plane then painted it before quilting.
The background is also painted before being quilted.  She made this for her father, Korean War veteran, US Navy, Robert M Randall.

He served aboard the USS Princeton, an air craft carrier.  After the war a friend, Bill Barber, acquired the Curtis Wright Falcon combat training plane from WWII.  Robert refurbished this plane, painting it Bolero red, a Chevy car color,  instead of the olive green it was originally.

The Turn Home | John Hogan

During World War II on average 6,000 airmen and airwomen would be killed or wounded and that averages to about 200 per day.  Some who never saw combat were killed in training, or enroute to the combat area. On the way to the target they fought for their country but THE TURN HOME they fought for themselves. To all those brave air crews we thank you for your service and for those that never made it home THANK YOU is not enough.

Making a Difference on Land, Sea, and Air | John Hogan

(This picture was taken from the USS North Carolina)

The Coast Guard does so many tasks it's hard to count. They protect our coastline day and night so we can all sleep safe and sound. During World War II they also manned the landing crafts that delivered our troops to distant shores. Did you know the Coast Guard is one of the oldest organizations of the federal government established in 1790. The Navy was established Eight years later so the Coast Guard was the only armed force on the sea for EIGHT YEARS! To all of those who served in the Coast Guard protecting our shores and rescuing people in distress we THANK YOU for your Service!

War Birds | Jeanne Thomas

I have always loved painting wild life, especially birds. I've also always been fascinated with aircraft. I went to willow run for every air show and have seen the thunderbirds and the blue angels so often I've lost count. When I moved to Florida I moved to a city that is near Hulbert field  and Eglin AFB. The jets and helicopters fly low over my house every day and it never gets old. The warlord series mixed my love of birds and aircraft. Can't wait to finish my next series. It's going to feature the navy's sea dragon helicopter and the thunderbird jets.

Art at Paul Baker Park-Future Wish List Project

Paul Baker Park is a small and inviting park located on Renolds Sweet Parkway and Ten Mile Road. Over the past few years the park has undergone substantial improvements such as the addition of an evergreen forest, the restoration of a victorian gazbo and new, updated landscaping. The park also features the city's only fountain.  The CAC has placed Paul Baker Park on the list of its priorities as to future locations of park sculpture.
